For over twenty years, The Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival has taken place during August. The festival is a celebration of short, independent films illuminating Black lives, and is a popular place for big studios to come and promote their projects to influential individuals within the film industry. Film buffs should stick around until September, as that’s when The Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival comes to town. In celebration of Juneteenth, historical, educational and cultural institutions come together on Martha’s Vineyard to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States and the importance of this national holiday. From films and art to presentations and panel discussions, there is plenty going on to get involved in.
