Beaches
Widely known for its relaxed vibe and quiet charm, Martha’s Vineyard is the quintessential destination for seaside retreats. For generations, locals and tourists alike have flocked to the island’s numerous beaches, enjoying the surf, summer breeze, sunshine and sand. Your stay at the Harbor View provides easy access to the shores of Edgartown and beyond.
Lighthouse Beach
125 feet in front of the hotel
Much as its name suggests, an iconic white tower – crowned by a glass-paneled lantern room – anchors this quiet sandy haven. Originally built in 1828, the “Harbor Light,” as it was called, sustained irreparable damage by a hurricane in 1938, and was replaced the following year by a pre-existing cast-iron lighthouse, transported from Ipswich to its current location, just footsteps away from the Harbor View Hotel.
Fuller Street Beach
.2 miles from the hotel, golf cart shuttles available
With calm tides and warm temperatures, this outer harbor beach is a favorite among families with younger children. Picnic under the sun or stroll north and west to Little Beach, which leads to the even-warmer waters of Eel Pond.
East Beach on Chappaquiddick Island
.7 miles to Chappy Ferry & 3.5 miles from Chappy Ferry to East Beach
A hidden gem among the shores of Martha’s Vineyard, this private paradise is often overlooked by Vineyard visitors. Located mere minutes from the Harbor View Hotel, this seaside expanse can be reached via the Chappy Ferry. An irresistible draw for mountain bikers and bird-watchers, this beach is also perfect for family picnics and meandering strolls.
South Beach / Katama Beach
4 miles from the hotel
South Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the Island. It’s a free and public beach located in the southern, Katama area of Edgartown and facing the Atlantic Ocean. It is a barrier beach, which means surf on one side and a calm protected pond on the other. The surf can be fairly rough, which is fun for body surfing, but it’s not great swimming for young kids. With ample parking and easy access via bike, this beach is a favorite among active-lifestylers.
Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach
4 miles from the hotel
Highly recommended by the hotel, this beach is perfect for a relaxing saltwater soak – perhaps best initiated by a launch off the Jaws Bridge, a prime location for diving. Of course, those more inclined to sightseeing than swimming are invited to scan the horizon for unobstructed views of Cape Cod and Nantucket Sound.
